OnePlus’s First Foldable Smartphone: A Game Changer in the Making

Another contender in the foldable phone market, the OnePlus Open has now made its official debut. First teased at Mobile World Congress last spring, OnePlus' foldable notebook-style phone is set to compete with companies like Samsung and Google. OnePlus First Foldable Smartphone details are given below:

Pre-orders are currently underway on the OnePlus website, paving the way for the impending release of this highly-anticipated phone. The official sale date is scheduled for October 26th

How much does the OnePlus Open cost?

There's only one configuration of the Open, with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and it'll cost $1,699/£1,599.

What are the and specifications of OnePlus Open?

When it comes to the OnePlus Open, there's a lot to talk about.

Design

What's most striking about the OnePlus Open design is how closely the device fits the shape of a traditional smartphone when closed (although the closed OnePlus Open is thicker than a standard smartphone). At 6.03 x 2.88 x 0.46 inches, it's not as wide as the Open Pixel Fold or as narrow as the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The OnePlus Open has a 7.82-inch screen, which is more display real estate than foldables from Samsung and Google. The Open's flex hinge helps open the device and OnePlus shows how compact it is – 69 parts compared to the industry average of 100 parts. According to OnePlus, this frees up more space in the phone.

Even with a compact hinge, OnePlus is promising a durable device out in the open. The hinge was put through 1 million testing bends, which OnePlus estimates will last a decade. The OnePlus Open also offers IPX4 water-resistance, which means it can withstand splashes but not complete submersion in water like the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

At 8.43 ounces, the OnePlus is light enough for an open foldable. The 8.92-ounce Galaxy Z Fold 5 has previously set the standard for portability.

You can get the OnePlus Open in Emerald Dusk (which is green) or Voyager Black.

Display

The 7.82-inch AMOLED panel that serves as the main display of the OnePlus Open has a 2440 x 2268 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The hinged design keeps folds to a minimum, resolving a common complaint with foldable displays.

On the exterior of the phone, you get a 6.31-inch covered display, which has a high brightness of 2,800 nits and 120Hz refresh rate. Like the internal display, the OnePlus Open's cover display is larger than those seen on competing foldable phones.

Camera

OnePlus has worked with lens specialist Hasselblad on recent flagships, and this partnership is on display once again with the OnePlus Open camera setup. The rear camera array houses three lenses – a 48MP main camera paired with a 48MP ultrawide shooter and a 64MP telephoto lens. The rear camera may offer 3x optical zoom.

OnePlus is particularly proud of the main camera, which uses a “pixel stacked” Sony LYT-T808 sensor, which is designed to capture more light by stacking pixels to free up more space. The end result should be brighter, clearer photos with less exposure.

You get two selfie cameras in OnePlus Open. The external display has a 32MP sensor while the internal display has a 20MP shooter.

Performance and Battery

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for maximum performance, and OnePlus did it with its foldable. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 also uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as its chipset – though one of Samsung's foldables has been optimized for performance – and we saw very similar numbers when we benchmarked the OnePlus Open.

OnePlus has equipped the Open with a 4,805 mAh battery – a hefty power pack for a foldable phone. When it comes to recharging the phone, you'll see the fastest speeds thanks to the Open's 67W SuperVOOC charging feature. According to OnePlus, it can fully charge the phone in just 42 minutes.

One thing you won't find on the OnePlus Open is wireless charging support. OnePlus had to cut costs somewhere to deliver a low-cost foldable, and it looks like it has removed wireless charging.

In terms of connectivity, you get Wi-Fi 7 support along with dual 5G cellular connectivity with OnePlus Open.

Software

OnePlus comes with Android 13 out of the box. OnePlus provides four years of software updates and an additional year of security support.

Although it looks and works a little different than so-called ‘stock' Android, it's familiar to anyone who's used a OnePlus phone recently.

But the main additional features are designed for internal efficiency. The laptop-style taskbar has drag-and-drop support, while the intuitive split-screen mode lets you use three apps simultaneously.
